The most important prerequisite to obtaining a current market value for any Civil War collectable is to first establish that the item you are attempting to value is authentic and not a reproduction or fake and then to date the item to verify the period from which it came or was used. This can be very difficult because of the many higher quality reproduction and fake Civil War items in the marketplace. Only those dealers who have handled many authentic items have the experience and knowledge to authenticate many of the items found today.
